22/12/07 Aeroventure receives Airship Developments AD500 Gondola

In late December, Aeroventure received the Airship Developments AD500 Gondola which was donated by the Airship Heritage Trust (formerly the Friends of Cardington Air Station FOCAS).
The Gondola is from G-BECE, the prototype AD500 c/n 001.
Although only making three flights from Cardington, G-BECE served as the template for all the later Skyship designs. It was built by Airship Developments, forerunner of Airship Industries in the Slingby factory at Kirkbymoorside near York.
The prototype was short lived as disaster struck on 8th March 1979. While moored outside at Cardington a storm blew up and the crew were unable to take the ship into the shed and so used the airship's emergency deflation ripcord before it was totally destroyed. Roger Munk's (possibly Munck) Airship Developments went broke after the accident with G-BECE's remains going to Cranfield for inspection, then back to Slingsby's.
Later, Munk launched Airship Industries starting with G-BIHN (c/n 002) which did a lot of flying and was famous for appearing in the James Bond film "A View to a Kill". G-BIHN was the only Skyship 500 licensed for commercial passenger operations at the time.

Thanks to Tim Rees for this photo of Airship Industries Skyship 500 / G-BIHN at Farnborough in September 1982. Our AD500 would have been very similar in appearance.
Once both gondolas were back at Slingsby's they approached Airship Heritage Trust to save them from disposal (see their website www.airshipsonline.com).
Once the Skyship 500 was 'perfected' the slightly larger Skyship 600 was developed, many of which still operate worldwide. The coastal recce version of that was dubbed the 'Sentinel'.
Thanks to Peter Davison for his help with this article and help in securing G-BECE for preservation at Aeroventure. Also a big thanks to museum members Phil Jarvis and Bill Fern for their help in saving this important part of Yorkshire and Britain's aviation heritage. Gondola photo contributed by Naylan.
Can you help with AD500 / G-BECE's history?
Please contact jim@aeroventure.org.uk, who would be grateful for any photographs or information

29/06/07 Aeroventure Setting up Museum Stand for Waddington Airshow

A real, "Who's got the bolt?", moment as the first Wessex blade was being fitted

A whole bunch of us were needed to re-fit XS481's blades after they were painted by Steve assisted by Nigel, lots of other time consuming jobs were done to get her into the best display condition for Waddington.
A special thanks to MASU (Marine Aircraft Salvage Unit) for transporting our Wessex to and from RAF Waddington.

Loading the A4 Skyhawk Radar model into its special packing case for transport to the show, the model is heavier than it looks!

02/06/07 Aeroventure Helps Isle of Barra commemorate Catalina Crash

On the 2nd June 2007, the Isle of Barra opened a memorial to the crew of the Catalina that crashed on Vatersay Bay on 12th May 1944. Much of the wreckage remains on the site and this and the new memorial is now accessible by a parking area and easy access footpath.
Museum members Phil Jarvis and Jim Keable visited Barra and the wreck site in August 2006 as part of their Scotland museum tour and on their return were happy to help the Barra Heritage and Cultural Centre by starting what would lead to the presentation of a large scale Catalina model in representative markings of the one that crashed.
The model had been donated to Aeroventure and was carefully restored by Don Valley Model Flying Club.
In order to deliver the model intact for the opening ceremony, Phil Jarvis and now fiancée Jan drove the 750 mile round-trip from Doncaster to Oban to put the model on the ferry.
The model is now on display at the wonderful Barra Heritage centre along with the history of the crash. With thanks to Rhoda from the Barra Heritage and Cultural Centre for the photos.

Naylan worked on the model before it was sent to Barra.

28/04/07 Museum members take Finningley DC-3 Flight

Saturday 28th April was a glorious sunny day - just what we wanted for our Douglas DC-3 flight from Finningley. On today's flight were Frank, Jim, Keith and Dave. A big thanks to Frank for letting me use his camera to take these photos.
The DC-3 in question was operated by Classic Flight (part of Air Atlantique). Formerly part of their polution control work, G-AMPY was restored in Royal Air Force Transport Command livery last year fitted out to carry up to 36 passengers.
We all enjoyed the flight and would recommend the experience to anyone. We look forward to Classic Flight's return to Finningley later this year - we suspect they will be very busy and I know four museum members who will be at the front of the queue!

Cargo side door shows that this DC-3 was actually manufactured as a C-47 transport for military service (she was built in 1945 and served with the RAF before being sold to a succession of airlines).

We asked the pilots to take us over the museum giving us these excellent views of AeroVenture and the former RAF Doncaster airfield site

Frank was quite pleased to see the results of his hard work cutting the museum grass on Friday, looking so good from the air

Looking over the new football statium with the museum slightly higher and to the right

On our return flight with Finningley airport in view over the port wing. You can also make out another airfield perimeter track in the foreground, this being RAF Bircotes. The airfield consisted of a grass strip with a connecting perimeter track with T2, B1 and blister hangars plus other miscellaneous buildings and was closed in 1948. It seems amazing now how close all of these airfields are (from a couple of thousand feet up over AeroVenture / RAF Doncaster on a clear day you can see RAF Finningley).

Thanks also to Helen for putting up with a long wait and taking these photographs on our return

No mistaking the front and side profile of the 70 year old classic Douglas design

Thank you to Dave Wood for supplying this shot of G-AMPZ one of G-AMPY's sisters
14/03/07 Museum member Vic Lowe awarded Honorary Membership of the Finningley Amateur Radio Society

On 14th March 2007 museum member Vic Lowe was awarded honorary membership of the Finningley Amateur Radio Society for all of his past sterling commitment towards the club.

We are pleased to start a new webpage for the radio society, for more information on GB2AIR click here now.

03/02/07 AeroVenture Group Visits Duxford

On the 3rd February a group from AeroVenture visited Duxford to see the new AirSpace hangar. A big well done for Callum Blagden who organised the visit

If you have not been to Duxford recently, now would be a good time for a catch up visit. As shown in the above picture, the Duxford team have done a wonderful job of presenting the aircraft in the new hangar, in fact the only thing missing was the smell of aircraft.
