21st June 2003 Yorkshire Spitfire Pilot's Widow Donates Large Aircraft Models to Doncaster AeroVenture

On 21st June 2003 AeroVenture was pleased to receive a set of four large scale model aircraft from Mrs Chris Andrew. The models were hand-built and flown by her Spitfire pilot husband Flt Lt Don Andrew, who passed away last year.

AeroVenture's Jim Keable said "we are thrilled to receive these models not only because of their size, quality and accuracy and the rare aircraft types they represent but because of the flying history and nature of their builder. These models are a wonderful attraction for AeroVenture and we are very grateful to Mrs Andrew for donating them to the museum.

From childhood Don had an interest in building and flying model aircraft this continuing into his retirement. Don joined the RAF in 1940 and was sent to South Africa for flying training. He flew Spitfire's with 229 and 65 Squadrons which included two years in Malta flying Spitfire MK V's. Rejoining the RAF after the war Don re-trained as a flying instructor, going on to be a flying instructor at RAF Cranwell. He was later in charge of Aberdeen University Air Squadron. Later Don both instructed and worked on air traffic control at RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

His aircraft modelling career included freeflight, electric and internal combusion powered models, competing at British National level and in the RAF championships.

The models are of the Blackburn 1912 monoplane (to quarter scale), SE 5a (to quarter scale), Tiger Moth (one fifth scale) and Fieseler Storch (one sixth scale).

AeroVenture would also like to thank Don's friend's Brian Kenny, who spent many hours preparing the models for display and Guy Jefferson MBE, who designed a memorial plaque to display with the models.

AeroVenture is the home of the South Yorkshire Aircraft Museum at Doncaster Lakeside. Website: www.aeroventure.org.uk, Telephone: 01302 761 616. The models can be viewed Thursday to Sunday 10am to 5pm.
